It is a well known fact that every man, woman and whoever is in between has more then one identity.
Tel Aviv, the city that hasn't stopped for 100 years, has more then once face, more then one identity.
The interpretation of art is in the eye of the beholder, every art piece may it be a painting, a photo, photo-art, sculpture, drawing, collage, etc, can have more then one interpretation and could symbolize more then one identity, of the creator and of the viewer.
Once you take all of these three elements togetheryou get the magnificent collection that is exhibited at Shorashim Gallery in Tel Aviv. “100 Identities” is an eclectic collection donated by a variety of versatile Israeli artists who all wish to help the cause of fund-raising for the Israeli Gay, Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender Association.
Who or what you are does not seem to play a role when it comes to art. Art transcends color, race and gender. The collection shows art created by men and women alive and dead all expressing the artists' own identities, as many as they may be. And they all combine into a beautiful mesh of color, texture and most of all emotion.
Bar Tal, the curator and producer of the exhibition, found a way to collect identities into one space.. Walking through the Gallery one can find art pieces that would attract and touch different people with different tastes, from vibrant colored good feeling paintings to delicate sculptures, from dark and meaningful oils to expressive modern art.
One would hope that at on the last day of this exhibition the works will all have found a new identity in their new homes and that the Association of GLBT will have raised the funds that are needed to keep voicing a few more voices of one of the many faces of Israeli society
